FORT GAINES HISTORICAL SITE
Ft. Gaines is located on historic Dauphin Island overlooking Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The island and the bay were mapped as early as 1519. The island was later colonized by the French and named Dauphine Island in 1707. During the next century, control of this strategic location switched from France to Great Britian to Spain and finally in 1813 the U. S. seized the area. Construction of the fort began in 1812 and was completed in 1858. The design incorporated the most advanced ideas in military architecture at that time. While touring the fort today you can touch the cannons used during the Civil War, view the harbor as soldiers did and see where they lived and worked, explore the tunnels and bastions, the officer's quarters and the museum. |
