FORT
CONDE'
Fort
Conde is a partially reconstructed
French Fort originally built in the
early 1700's, which served as headquarters
for colonial Governments of the French,
British, & Spanish. In the mid
I 800's after being seized by America,
Congress declared the fort surplus
and it was destroyed. The Fort today
stands on the original site and is
one third the original size. Tour
the fort, a museum, and hold your
ears when the French Soldier shoot
their muskets.
FORT
GAINES HISTORICAL SITE
Ft.
Gaines is located on historic Dauphin
Island overlooking Mobile Bay and
the Gulf of Mexico. The island and
the bay were mapped as early as 1519.
The island was later colonized by
the French and named Dauphine Island
in 1707. During the next century,
control of this strategic location
switched from France to Great Britian
to Spain and finally in 1813 the U.
S. seized the area. Construction of
the fort began in 1812 and was completed
in 1858. The design incorporated the
most advanced ideas in military architecture
at that time. While touring
the fort today you can touch the cannons
used during the Civil War, view the
harbor as soldiers did and see where
they lived and worked, explore the
tunnels and bastions, the officer's
quarters and the museum.

residents. Authentically costumed
characters make Old Mobile's legends
come to life.

Theater, which was built by a black
contractor in the early 1900's; and

tell you the story of the Clotilde,
the last slave ship to arrive in the
United States. You will also tour
the National African American archives.
